I just love this picture of my niece. I can't get enough of how spunky she is! She reminds me of myself when I was young...except cooler.

VERY IMPORTANT- Must write Senators about stopping predators!

As you know, I never miss an episode of Oprah. I felt compelled to share with you something I learned about from one of last week's shows.

The show was about child predators and a law that is about to expire. The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act is about to expire and is up for renewal in Congress and it is imperative, I feel, that we let our representatives know how important this.

http://www.oprah.com/article/oprahshow/20090220-tows-adam-walsh-act

A little about this:
"The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act was signed into law in 2006 but recent news reports reveal most states will not be in compliance with the law by the upcoming July deadline. Supporters of the law acknowledge there are adjustments that should be made to the law, but they are adamant, as am I, that the basic purpose and spirit of Adam's act must be upheld. The act calls for a National Sex Offender Registry, which is critical to the safety of our children."

SO, what I am asking of you is to go to Senate.gov and House.gov and follow the steps to write to your specific states Senators or Representative. Below is a sample letter that you should COPY AND PASTE in to the MESSAGE section where you write to your representative. It took me about 5 minutes and I feel that it could have an impact.

We don't want these predators roaming our neighborhoods without us knowing!

Dear [Senator/Congressman/or Congresswoman]:

I am sure you share my belief that we must do everything in our power to help protect our children from sexual predators in our communities. That is why I am asking for your help today.

I am extremely concerned about how we track registered sex offenders in our country. According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, an estimated 100,000 sex offenders are unaccounted for and not living where they are registered. Because law enforcement agencies are too underfunded and overwhelmed to track them, these dangerous predators are free to roam undetected from state to state, targeting and re-offending more innocent children.

The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act was signed into law in 2006 but recent news reports reveal most states will not be in compliance with the law by the upcoming July deadline. Supporters of the law acknowledge there are adjustments that should be made to the law, but they are adamant, as am I, that the basic purpose and spirit of Adam's act must be upheld. The act calls for a National Sex Offender Registry,
which is critical to the safety of our children.

I implore you to reexamine this law with fellow lawmakers, reauthorize it and see that it is fully funded. I realize our country's current economic crisis will not make this charge an easy one, but what could be more urgent and of greater importance than the safety and well-being of our children?

Sincerely,
(your name here)

earth hour

I actually participated in Earth Hour. Earth Hour was tonight from 8:30pm-9:30pm (why this time, I don't know...) and you're supposed to unplug and turn off EVERYTHING in honor of the ole' Earth. The Empire State Bldg. and many monuments around the world are apparently going dark. Not sure where this holiday or event came from, but what the heck.

At 8:30pm on the dot I turned off every light and unplugged as much as I could. I lit candles and then I wondered what the heck I was gonna do in the dark for an hour. So, I decided to do the dishes and turn on just one light. One light on is better than all the lights on. So, then I finished and I wondered what else I could do in the dark since I couldn't use my computer or my TV or any electronics. So, I sorted through some laundry that I have to do tomorrow and I put away some clutter lying around. Then, at about 9:15pm, I totally failed and went to my computer. I can't do it! Is that horrible?!!! So, I am sitting here (in the dark, I swear) with not one light on in my whole apartment, except my computer, typing this message about Earth Hour. Five more minutes until the lights are back on...

new Dora doll- is it too sexy?

Everyone is up in arms over the new Dora, The Explorer "teen" doll that they now sell at Target and Wal-Mart. Click on the link to read the story. No, she is no longer an explorer! She now wears prissy little ballet slippers and has grown her hair out. What are they teaching girls? That in order to be "pretty" that it's not cool to wear a backpack and sneakers once you hit a certain age? I understand the outrage, but it will probably sell!!!

pizza vending machine

LOVE THIS!

A vending machine that whips up FRESH pizza. It is not a frozen thing that it simply cooks, it literately whips up the dough and tomato sauce, etc. and you have a PIZZA from a vending machine!

madoffs own words

I'm sure many of you have been following the Bernie Madoff case and I was shocked today to read his courtroom statement that he wrote in his won words. It was shockingly honest and detailed. SO sad.

Skiing at Gunstock in New Hampshire

Great ski trip with the family to New Hampshire. We skied- Pats Peak, Gunstock, Ragged Mountain, Loon and Sunapee. New England is super cold this time of year but the skiing was surprisingly great. Sunapee and Gunstock definitely had the best conditions. We stayed at a lovely cabin on a lake (covered in snow) in Weare, NH (Where is Weare??). Great times!!!
